Pprofile Professor Roger Ellul-Micallef

Roger Ellul-Micallef MD (RUM), PhD (Edin), FRCPE, FRCP, Hon DSc (Westminster), MOM was born in Malta on 30 September 1944. He carried out his postgraduate training at Sir John Crofton’s department at the University of Edinburgh. He is the founder of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Malta. He is the author of many peer reviewed papers published in leading clinical and scientific journals and has contributed chapters to a number of British and North American postgraduate medical books, including some edited by Sir Peter Barnes. His research work has been said to have contributed to a better management of asthma, establishing the use of glucocorticoids as the mainstay in its treatment.Professor Ellul-Micallef was Chairman of the Council of Europe’s Committee on Higher Education and Research (1993-1996). He was elected Pro-Rector and later Rector of the University of Malta (1991-2006), and Chairman of the European Access Network (2000-2008). He was appointed Grande Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana and awarded the grade of Commandeur de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Government, for services rendered to Higher Education. Among his interests is the study of the History of Medicine, especially the development of the Maltese medical tradition. He has published a number of works on the subject, including a two volume work on Sir Temi Zammit, of Brucellosis fame.
